PROJECT 2.5D FIGHTER

The goal of this project of mine is to try and create a basic fighting game that works primarily in a 2D plane but is built and run in 3D. A key example of the concept in action would be the current Capcom Street Fighter 4 series. It is also worth mentioning that this is a project I've been wanting to go through with since I first started at university some years ago.

This is the central hub blog post which should contain url links to all the Project-related blog posts from here on in (and those posts should url link to here as well).

Greetings to all. I have uploaded my new Rapid Tutorial *Wired*.

Be sure to check it out, it's under 20 minutes and it helps to solve some of the issues some of my viewers have been having as far as adding and animating cords, cables, wires and tentacles. There are other methods to doing this but I think this is the easiest. As always, be sure to post any results you may have from my tutorials and I'll put them up in my *viewer Results* section.

Oh, and here is the link to the rapidshare file with the Max scene, videos and some extras.

Remember, all of my videos are recorded at a full 1920 x 1080 resolution for maximum viewer satisfaction! If there is any questions don't be shy post them and I will do my best to field them for you.

Hey guys, Mr. Gawn here

I just posted my newest tutorial *Robo Rig*

In this set of tutorial i will show you how to set up and rig robotic parts for your mech, spy drone or common place machinery.

be sure to download the *.max* scene file here along with many kewl extras and videos recorded at 1920x1080 to help you all learn

Hello everybody. . . (all 3 of you)

I just posted my new tutorial, "Spring Rig"

Spring Rig:
In this tutorial I will show you how to rig bones using a IK Spline solver. Doing this can allow you to easily rig up capes, wires, hair, antennas and more!

Plus:
In the Rapid Share file I also included a custom UI for your quad roll-outs, as well as a custom color scheme. Both of which is help you become more familiar and comfortable while working in the *Expert Mode* in 3DS Max.

Fear Not:
I hear all the cries for full character rigging. It will be done though history tells me that my longer tutorials don't have many people that follow them. Make no mistake, that tutorial would take a very longtime to finish. I will have to break it up over a series of tutorial sets.

So until then, here is the "Spring Rig Tutorial". It's fast, fun and very easy to do. I will take a load of your shoulders with this easy trick!!!

Youtube:
Pt. 1 of 3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhHg0ZD1ULQ
Pt. 2 of 3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36583YqcgF4
Pt. 3 of 3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0clEfFH2T8

Be sure to download the Rapid Share files for all of the videos in 1920x1080 HD and the *.max* project files. There are great extras with this package too. I'm sure you will enjoy them.

LEARNING - Box Modelling an Alien: Take 2

Doing the tutorial again but this time following the proportions/directions of the tutorial with less deviation. The aim here is to complete the task in a much shorter timeframe.

HOUR 1: Head complete! Eye-stalk, Eye-ball, Mouth, Smoothing and sculpt all complete.

HOUR 2: Neck and body

HOUR 3: Shoulder and arm

HOUR 4: Hands, Legs and Feet

HOUR 5: Fine Tuning & Smoothing

M first attempt the modelling tutorial originally took a total of 10+ hours to complete. This time around the process was about half of that. The end product is much closer to the given example and looks much better in terms of shape, topology and edge flow. Also fewer polygons/vertices used.

LEARNING - Box Modelling an Alien

Following this tutorial for box modelling a cartoon alien character in using box-modelling Blender.

http://www.blendercookie.com/2009/12/01/box-modeling-an-alien-character-in-blender-2-5-alpha-0/

HOUR 1:
Set up Blender 2.5

Set up Box object
Added Mirror Mode Modifier
Basic Head shape.

HOUR 2:
Modelled 'Eye Stalk'
Inset Recess for Eyeball
Added Eyeball and shaped Eyelids

Recessed Mouth

HOUR 3:
Modeled Lips for mouth
Sculpt Mode - Shaped head and lips

Extruded upper Body

HOUR 4:
Shaped Upper Body, Neck, Chest, Back, etc
Extruded Arm from torso, includes extra edge loops for shoulder and elbow joints
Spent very long time shaping shoulder and re-adjusting edge-flow.

HOUR 5 & 6:
Shaped Arm:- Upper, Lower & Elbow
Created Hand:-
1. Wrist
2. Palm
3. Subdivided palm Edges to form Finger sockets
4. Extrude Finger Socket, scaled-down
5. Extrude Finger (plus knuckle/joints) - multiple extrudes and loop cuts
6. Shape Joints
7. Copy/Duplicate finger
8. Merge vertices to attach finger
9. Duplicate half-finger for thumb - scale up
10. Rotate & position thumb
11. remove faces for thumb socket
12. create new faces to attach thumb.
13. re-organise polys for thumb edge flow & smoothing

HOUR 7:
Hands finally adjusted, positioned, fixed and smoothed to satisfaction... phew!

HOUR 8:
Legs, buttocks and feet all done. Model is finally completed.

The whole thing looks similar to that in the tutorialin some ways and very different in others. The main different was the attempt at a somewhat more humanoid figure and human style 5-digit hands (using ideas from the first tutorial). The overall result looks a bit silly and took some time to make but was worth the knowledge gained so far.

Will probably re-attempt this tutorial to try and attain something closer to the tutorial model and also aim to finish in a much quicker time.

Dead Fantasy

A while ago soem chap put together a series of animated CG videos using models or characters from the Final Fantasy and Dead or Alive games.

http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Dead_Fantasy

http://animeblogz.com/dead-fantasy/

Of DAZzling and POSErs

There seem to be many sites and programs around for taking pre-rendered, pre-built 3D objects and arranging them for use in either snapshots, scenes or animations.

3D POSE or Poser is one such program I have heard of:
http://store.smithmicro.com/default.aspx
http://www.poserworld.com/Home.aspx

The other is 3d DAZ:
http://www.daz3d.com/i/0/0?_m=d

Many pre-made models on these services are pay-per item, which makes for a great business model but there are some freebies available too. Perhaps some content can be borrowed and learned from here? Who knows.
http://www.daz3d.com/i/3d-models/free-3d-models?cat=382&_m=d

The quality of content on offer is remarkably high so it is understandable why many people will opt to pay for these services/software/solutions rather than having to bother learning how to make their own models. Certainly a good legal option for casual interests.

LEARNING - Character Modelling in Blender

Succeeded in following this video tutorial on CG-tuts for modelling a humanoid character in Blender.

http://cg.tutsplus.com/tutorials/blender/character-modeling-in-blender-basix/

Above is the reference picture I worked from, included with the tutorial and below is the final result of my work. closely matching the reference despite the clearly not-quite-normal human proportions.

Reception/feedback has been positive for my first model although there are improvements needed in the topology, edgeflow and joints if this were ever to be rigged up for animation.

This final product is unlikely to be used in other projects but it has been a good learning experience.

Of Gmod's, Facepunch and OBJ files

Garry's Mod is a free-to-use mod based on Half-Life2's Source Engine. It lets people play around with objects and the physics engine.

The community for it creates many objects to be used as 'toys' within the environment meaning that there's plenty of objects, files and content that can be gotten from here for use of testing (etc).

There's also much in the way of original models created based on existing 3D game models or even obj files ripped straight out of the games themselves.

Many are in the format of 'Ragdolls' but some will be in formats compatible with 3DSMAX and Blender. Most likely will come without rigging information.

3D Software and warez

Currently looking into 3D modelling & rendering software, Blender.

Popular 'industry' IDEs include 3D-Studo-Max (3DS-MAX) and Maya. They're big and expensive so most hobbyists or enthusiasts can't make use of it without piracy.

For now I'll be sticking to the free Blender software. Good for learning the fundamentals and perfectly legal should I ever intend to submit work for academic purposes or publish.

Other useful free software includes Sculptris, made by the makers of ZBrush.

Also free is the Unreal Development Kit (or UDK) now available courtesy of the dev studio. May come in very useful later.

Welcome to the blog of Navigatorhat's dabblings and adventures in exploring the wonderful world of 3D.

In this blog the aim is to record findings, tutorials and other developments in my understanding of interactive and non-interactive 3D development.
