For modeling (open-source or free of charge)

Caligari trueSpace - http://www.caligari.com/downloads.html (a complete modeling, texturing, animating, rendering, and 3D collaboration tool, used by everyone from 3D enthusiasts to illustrators, researchers to teachers, architects to design engineers, and more.)

gMax - http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax (based on Discreet's 3ds Max application used by professional computer graphics artist Tools and features rarely used or completely unrelated to creating 3D game models were removed (most if not all of the more complex rendering, materials, shaders, physics simulation, and some of the more advanced geometry tools, plus the rendering engine), leaving the core modeling, texturing, and basic animation rigging and keyframing capabilities. In 2005, the software was discontinued)

Blender - http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/ (is a free 3D graphics application that can be used for modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, rigging, water and smoke simulations, skinning, animating, rendering, particle and other simulations, non-linear editing, compositing, and creating interactive 3D applications, including video games, animated film, or visual effects.)

Arts of Illusion - http://www.artofillusion.org/downloads (Art of Illusion is a free, open source 3D modelling and rendering studio. Many of its capabilities rival those found in commercial programs. Highlights include subdivision surface based modelling tools, skeleton based animation, and a graphical language for designing procedural textures and materials)

OpenFX - http://www.openfx.org/download.html (OpenFX is an Open-Source 3D modeling, animation and rendering suite)

Google SketchUp - http://sketchup.google.com/download/ (s a 3D modeling program designed for architects, civil engineers, filmmakers, game developers, and related professions, it is designed to be easier to use than other cad softwares)

BRL-CAD - http://brlcad.org/d/download (BRL-CAD is primarily designed for Computer Aided Design, it is a powerful cross-platform open source solid modeling system that includes interactive geometry editing, high-performance ray-tracing for rendering and geometric analysis, image and signal-processing tools, a system performance analysis benchmark suite, libraries for robust geometric representation, with more than 20 years of active development.)

MeshLAB - http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/ (MeshLab is an open source, portable, and extensible system for the processing and editing of unstructured 3D triangular meshes. )

Wings3D - http://www.wings3d.com/ (Wings 3D is a subdivision modeler inspired by Nendo and Mirai from Izware. It is possible to assign materials, vertex color, UV coordinates and textures, but there will be improvements in those features before Wings goes 1.0. There is no support in Wings for doing animations.)

K3D - http://www.k-3d.org/downloads (K-3D is free-as-in-freedom 3D modeling and animation software. It combines flexible plugins with a visualization pipeline architecture, making K-3D a versatile and powerful tool for artists.)

ZModeler - http://www.zmodeler2.com/?mode=downloads (Zanoza Modeler (ZModeler) is a software for creating and modifying 3D artwork (models) for variouse games. Comparing to advanced 3D Graphics packages, ZModeler is not intended to produce very detailed 3D models required for photo-realistic renderings, instead, ZModeler should be used for low or average-detailed 3D models for realtime rendering in games)

Anim8r - http://www.anim8or.com/main/ (Anim8or is a 3D modeling and character animation program. Even though it is far from a complete professional level application like 3DStudio MAX or Lightwave it has enough capability to be of use to others.)

3dPlus2 - http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/software/3dPlus/default.asp (3DPlus is yet another 3D design software that enables you to create 3D graphics with no previous experience on modeling required. With 3DPlus you can create 3D designs in just a few minutes – with no need for any complicated VRML or other programming.)
